This week:
Science:
-activated prior knowledge about energy and shared ideas with the class.
-learned about the two main branches of energy, kinetic and potential energy, by reading a text, considering specific examples, and by playing a game outside similar to "red light, green light."
-participated in a "scoot" activity to identify various forms of energy using specific terminology.
-reviewed important concepts of potential, kinetic and gravitational energy with a special guest from UBC Let's Talk Science. Students took on various roles in two large groups to conduct an experiment using a ramp and ball to observe and measure forms of energy in action.
Social Studies:
-participated in a mapping activity to identify the routes of the earlier European explorers around the world.
-discussed and underlined key concepts related to European culture pre-confederation.
-read an informational text in partners about Christopher Columbus and answered comprehension questions to identify important details.
-discussed and read about the use of beaver fur as part of the fur trade, and interactions between Europeans and First Nations Peoples.
-viewed an NFB film about the fur trade and the competition between Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company.
Mathematics:
-reviewed basic terminology (numerator, denominator, une demie, etc.) and created fraction sentences using their fractions cards.
-worked in partners to answer questions to identify and represent fractions of a whole and of a set.
-completed an informal check-in to gauge student understanding early on in our unit.
French Language Arts:
-discussed and reviewed an informational text highlighting three individuals who take initiative to pick up garbage found on our beaches in anticipation of Earth Day and answered comprehension questions in partners.
-completed a grammatical activity related to apostrophes.
Physical Education:

-explore our classroom library "book fair style" to select new French books and read silently in class.
-participate in Daily Physical Activity by running laps around the school yard in the mornings and playing short active games outside as an afternoon break.
-carry out classroom responsibilities to support our learning environment.
