Our teacher feedback will look like:
- Descriptive comments (oral or written)
- Use of a rubric (emerging, developing, proficient, extending, and in between)
- Use of a checklist
- Scores on quizzes
Our classroom posters that we refer to with students:
The official wording that will appear on Written Learning Updates and the Summary of Learning:
NEW THIS YEAR: "In between" categories are NOT permitted on written reports.
- In previous years, you may have seen a "bar" on the proficiency scale that was 1/2 Developing 1/2 Applying, or 1/2 Applying 1/2 Extending.
- You may continue to see this when we use rubrics to communicate student learning in class on various assignments, quizzes and learning activities, as we feel it is a more accurate representation of student learning.
- However, on Written Learning Updates, we need to select the proficiency scale descriptor that most accurately describes each student's overall understanding of grade-level learning expectations in the subject area.
- This year, you will not see a "bar" in between two categories on the proficiency scale on written reports. As such, students who may have received 1/2Developing 1/2Applying last year, may see "Developing" this year; or students receiving 1/2Developing 1/2Proficient on a rubric may see “Developing” on the written report as they are not fully Proficient yet. We do not look back at former report cards. We consider the learning evidence students have provided us to date (in-class observations, informal learning activities, formal learning assessments).
There is also increased emphasis on self-reflection and descriptive feedback:
